killed in a stabbing on walnut street in the seminary area of oakland. police are investigating the possibility the killings are related. a high stakes meeting at the white house this afternoon. congressional leaders will talk with president obama trying to avert the "fiscal cliff." ed payne tells us they only have four days. reporter: in what's seen as a last-minute attempt to reach a deal, president obama meets at the white house with senate majority leader harry reid, house minority leader nancy pelosi, senate minority leader mitch mcconnell and house speaker john boehner. they have only four days to reach an agreement or the u.s. economy will go off the so- called "fiscal cliff." that's when automatic spending increases and cuts would take effect. reaching a deal won't be easy because both sides are involved in a high stakes political blame game. >> we are here in washington working while the members of the house of representatives

are out watching movies and watching the kids play soccer and basketball and doing all kinds of things. they should be here. >> i told the president we would be happy to look at wah he proposes but the truth is we are coming up against a hard deadline and as i said this is a conversation we should have had months ago. >> reporter: democrats want to extend the bush-era tax cuts to everyone except those americans making $250,000 or more a year. many republicans are against any tax increases. most americans just want something to be done. >> people are just tired of partisanship and they want everyone to come together. >> reporter: if lawmakers don't reach a deal by january 1, many economists are concerned it could eventually lead to another recession. i'm ed payne reporting. president obama appears to have more backing from the public in budget negotiations. a gallup tracking poll released wednesday gives mr. obama 54%

support compared to 26% for house speaker john boehner. 5:02. a looming dock worker strike threatens to hurt the economy, as well. longshoremen are locked in negotiations with shipping companies over royalties paid to workers for each ton of cargo they move. a shutdown would impact 15 ports along the east coast and the gulf and officials estimate it will cost $1 billion a day. 5:03. let's check traffic and weather. we had a break yesterday but i guess rain is coming back. >> it's all gone. >> hello. >> it didn't last very long. we got rain heading towards the bay area and you can see that low. it's right there. so it hasn't quite hit the bay area yet. but by later on this afternoon, that's when we're going to see light showers and it's going to quickly spread all across the bay area, continuing to tomorrow morning. so it's on approach right now and you can see those showers. bring an umbrella if you are heading outside at all today. so again you won't need it for this morning. the only thing we're talking

about are all these cold temperatures. very chilly. fairfield 34 degrees. san francisco in the 40s. it's going to be a cold day this afternoon. temperatures sightly below what we saw yesterday, 54 in oakland, 51 in san rafael, 52 in santa rosa. so you got the idea. just a cold rainy day on tap. it looks like it's going to continue through tomorrow clearing out sunday and a chance of rain on new year's eve. the night looks clear. tuesday, wednesday unsettled, clearing thursday a mixed bag for next week. in the meantime the roads are still pretty much free and clear. you can see it's looking good toward the bay bridge. this is usually our best indicator of how things are moving across the bay area. everything is flowing nicely

towards doyle drive. more lanes open towards southbound 101 heading into san francisco. if you are traveling the nimitz, various lanes are blocked approaching embarcadero. scheduled only until about 5:00 this morning. so not too much longer. eastbound through livermore various lanes blocked according to caltrans until 9:00 this morning. south bay drive times are all still at the limit. we never saw any delays in the south bay yesterday on the guadalupe parkway or 101. mass transit on time. muni we mentioned it all morning. 100th anniversary free rides all day and new year's eve night, as well. that's a check of traffic and weather. back to you guys. on this morning's bay area watch, a shooting is under investigation at an east bay bart station. the 18-year-old victim is expected to recover. he was shot in the parking lot of the pittsburg-bay point station just before 7:00 last night. at this time there are no

suspects. the shooting and investigation caused major delays for bart riders. as did reports of a man with a gun outside the concord bart station. this is just after the pittsburg incident last night. but police say it was not related. no word if a suspect was ever found by officers. trains are running again this morning. it is 5:06. gunfire from police hits a suspect at an el cerrito gas station. it happened last night just after 6:30. police say they came across a man pistol whipping a woman at a chevron station on san pablo and potrero avenues. two officers opened fire. they hit the suspect. he is now in critical condition. contra costa county d.a.'s office is investigating the shooting along with the police. we have the identity of a man killed by the police in walnut creek. he was 22-year-old anthony banta. police got a 911 call from a screaming woman at the diablo point apartments yesterday morning. when officers arrived they said they were confronted by banta who was armed but so far they

have declined to describe what kind of weapon he had. fairfield police want help identifying two armed robbers caught by a surveillance camera. the video shows what happened when a 7-eleven clerk opened the cash register sunday night. one of the men pulled a gun and robbed the store. no word on how much money they got. police think this robbery was related to another one in the same area at about the same time. a bay area cop lost two guns to burglars who hit his home in antioch. the officer who works for an undisclosed bay area agency returned home wednesday night to find three burglars in his house. when he went in they ran out the back and apparently used one of the stolen guns to keep the officer from catching him. >> he did give chase and the -- one of the suspects did drop some of the property that was stolen. at the same time, one of the suspects fired a shot in the air and at that point, the

resident ceased giving chase. >> last month in brentwood another officer's home was hit. that officer shot and wounded one of the suspects. oakland is hiring some new help as it tries to cut down on crime in the city. legendary lawman bill bratton will become a consultant for the oakland police department. he helped reduce violent crime when headed up the new york and l.a. pds but some residents aren't sure a new consultant is a good solution to the city of oakland. the oakland city council by the way votes next month on the plan to hire bratton. it's going to cost $250,000 to use him as a consultant. a milestone today for san francisco's muni. the public transit system is turning 100 years old and there's a celebration designed to benefit everyone. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco to give us some history. >> reporter: 100 years ago the

first muni line started running from geary to 33rd avenue. today, muni railway serves about 200 million passengers a year. it has a network of 63 bus routes a historic light rail system, streetcars and three cable car lines. but before muni even existed, the city's public transit system involved horse-drawn buggies. to celebrate, service on all muni services including the cable car line will be free starting right now until 5 a.m. tomorrow. originally muni was planning to charge riders a 5-cent fare because that was the original cost about 100 years ago. but instead, they decided to go with free, which i'm sure riders won't disagree with and it won't be the last time we'll see free fares on muni. they will do it again on new year's eve as they have for the past 13 years. in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> that's a bonus, good to hear on a cable car that's six bucks a ride. you got a family of four? 24 bucks. >> even if you don't have kids, just do it because it's free.

lincoln continental that was turning on interstate 580 from 98th avenue. a passenger in the lincoln was kill. the bmw driver ran away but eventually was caught. an 18-year-old shot at an east bay bart station is out of surgery this morning and expected to survive. bart police found the victim in the parking lot of the pittsburg-bay point station a few mints before 7:00 last night. he was taken to john muir hospital in walnut creek with life-threatening injuries. police say the shooting had something to do with a car crash in the parking lot. at this time they have no suspects. police in el cerrito opened fire at a gas station hitting a suspect there. police found a man beating a woman just after 6:30 last night in a chevron station on san pablo and potrero avenues. they say he was pistol whipping the woman. two officers then opened fire hitting the suspect. the man now in critical condition. the contra costa county d.a.'s office and police are investigating. an autopsy is planned today on the body of the man killed

we start with a little rain i guess today, huh? >> at least later on. right now it's cold outside really cold. did you notice it coming in? >> yeah, it was. >> yeah. grab a jacket. temperatures are cooler than yesterday. and i thought yesterday was told! so right now we are just watching those showers. they are off to the coast right now but they are inching closer towards the bay area. so rain by this afternoon. that's what we're thinking, light rain and it continues to remain unsettled until saturday morning at least the first half of saturday continues to look wet. so these are your temperatures right now. yeah, it is pretty cold. look at that santa rosa, fairfield, close to freezing, not quite. but a little more mild in oakland, san francisco looking at low to mid-40s. 39 along the peninsula down in san jose. by the afternoon, temperatures are going to be slightly cooler today as well than yesterday. 54 in fremont. 51 in san rafael and about 50 degrees in fairfield. so these temperatures are maybe slightly cooler than ba we saw yesterday. the biggest difference is the rain. that's what you'll notice once

again remains unsettled through the weekend at least on saturday. mostly sunny skies sunday. chance of rain returns for new year's eve but for right now, new year's eve night and new year's day both look dry with more statehouse returning by wednesday. showers returning by wednesday. no metering lights on the bay bridge all week long so things are flowing nicely into s no delay all across the upper deck. we'll go to some other maps and live traffic cameras. this is the san mateo bridge. this is the commute direction. obviously it has not been much of a commute at all this week. it's been quiet in both directions of westbound and eastbound 92. and to milpitas now 880 and 237 if you are crossing any of these spans westbound 237 looks good for the silicon valley ride. the nimitz you may still find some roadwork in lanes but they should have wrapped it up by now northbound 880 approaching the embarcadero. headlights look great past

got this storm inching closer towards the bay area and this is actually just an area of light rain and some clouds. the real storm system is actually just behind it a little out of range of our hi- def doppler right now. but this right here could bring us some light scattered sprinkles possibly in the north bay as soon as this morning. the rest of the rain is set to hit this afternoon evening and continuing into saturday. so yeah we continue with that chance of rain into at least the first half of the weekend. so this is the low we're talking about. all those blue skies, sunshine, that's the high pressure system that's continuing to move farthe inland. so bring a jacket. cold temperatures out there you'll really notice it once you step outside. so we'll time this out with futurecast. increasing clouds throughout the morning and then right around midday we start to get hit first in the north bay in the afternoon, and then spreading farther south just kind of seeing scattered showers throughout the afternoon and the evening and the overnight into saturday. it still remains unsettled. if you are doing any traveling

radar. a looming storm system off the coast is getting closer to the bay area, chance of rain this afternoon. much more traffic and weather coming up. the storms have passed for now but there appears to be a delayed impact. a portion of a cliff collapsed at baker beach yesterday in san francisco. one of the trails there is shut down now. the collapse is likely the result of all that rain we have had past couple of weeks. crews are putting the finishing touches on the devil's slide tunnel in san mateo county. an opening had been projected for around new year's time but that has been pushed back to sometime in the next two or three months. the tunnels through the san pedro mountains are largely finished but operating systems are still being installed. so drivers will have to use the windy coastal road a little bit longer. got a news view but soon you'll be inside the tunnels. an orphan bobcat kitten has a unique problem. she's too nice. fire crews found the bobcat nicknamed chips injured in the

chips fire in plumas national forest in august. she's too cute! the sierra wildlife rescue in placerville took her in to make sure she would be healthy enough to survive on her own. as part of her training regiment to toughen her up chips will have to chase her own mice and rabbits for meals and she is going to have to stop sleeping on the soft bed like she had grown used to while receiving treatment. she got spoiled. >> she has been in club med for the past couple of months. >> how can you not spoil her, so cute. >> tough it up a little bit. according to guinness world records a dog in arizona is the world's tallest female dog. >> that's bella a great dane that stands over 3 feet tall on all fours and weighs 170 pounds. to measure her, her owners had to get a special measuring stick. you measure them from the front legs from the ground up to the top of the shoulder. she has to be measured three different distinct times in three different positions and has to be at least three witnesses.
